March 15–22, 2026
Ananda Cottages, Ubud, Bali
Join us for a sacred cultural immersion during the most profound week on the Balinese calendar.
“Celebrating the Balinese New Year” is a curated 8-day experience inviting you to witness, understand, and participate in Bali’s most sacred series of ceremonies: Melasti, Ogoh-Ogoh, and Nyepi. Held at the tranquil Ananda Cottages in Ubud, this immersive journey offers a blend of cultural education, ritual participation, guided meditations, art-making, storytelling, and community connection.
Whether you're a seeker, traveler, artist, or someone deeply drawn to Balinese culture and spirituality—this is your invitation to step into the rhythm of the island's most meaningful time.
Melasti – Purification at the Sea
3–4 days before Nyepi
Melasti is a deeply sacred cleansing ceremony in which villagers journey together to the sea, rivers, or sacred springs to purify both tangible and intangible impurities. Holy heirlooms, statues, and sacred objects from temples are ritually bathed, accompanied by offerings, prayer, and gamelan music. Participants wear traditional attire in white and gold, symbolizing spiritual purity.
Melasti is not just a physical cleansing—it's a collective act of clearing the mind, heart, and spirit in preparation for the New Year. We will be invited to respectfully observe and take part in the offerings at a local water temple.
Ogoh-Ogoh – The Night of Chaos and Catharsis
The evening before Nyepi (March 18, 2026)
On the night before Nyepi, New Year’s Eve, all villages in Bali, erupt in one of its most dramatic and theatrical rituals: the Ogoh-Ogoh parade. Larger than life papier-mâché demon .effigies—crafted by local men and boys —are carried through the streets to symbolize the negative forces and inner demons that must be released before the New Year.
Accompanied by loud drumming, Gamelan gongs and torchlight, the parade reaches a crescendo of noise, fire, and energy. By burning or banishing the Ogoh-Ogoh at the end of the night, the community symbolically purges chaos and resets its spiritual balance. It’s an unforgettable, high-energy ritual of collective catharsis. In the later afternoon people begin gathering on the parade routes…we can choose to join either in the center of downtown Ubud, or a smaller village ceremony.
Nyepi – The Day of Silence
March 19, 2026
Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, is the actual New Year’s Day—a 24-hour period when the entire island shuts down in stillness. No lights, no travel, no work, no entertainment. Even the airport closes. Locals and visitors alike stay indoors, observing the four traditional restrictions: no fire, no travel, no activity, no entertainment (Catur Brata Penyepian). Nyepi is not a punishment, but a gift—a sacred day to reflect, meditate, and reset. It is believed that evil spirits, seeing the island completely empty and silent, will pass over, leaving Bali in peace for the year to come.

Ellen’s love affair with dancing and singing began when she first heard music..the call to move brought her to her feet; from ballroom to tap and jazz, to musical theater, to rock and roll…onward to Texas with the two step and onward to Esalen to discover Gabrielle Roth and Emilie Conrad…From the 5Rhythm Wave’s pulsing percussive rhythms, to the undulate amniotic watery palate of breaths and sounds in Continuum.
For the next 25 years at Esalen, Ellen opened the portal to the dancing path at 7:00 AM, enticing all who crossed the threshold to let their spirits dance, their hearts sing and souls move. What a laboratory was that sunrise dancing classroom…to the deck, above the Pacific, to the grass and into the pool we danced.
During this period, Ellen played a pivotal role in developing and administering the Movement Arts Program at Esalen from 1984 to 2003.
And, now, Ellen joins forces with you and all who come to the jeweled dance floor for a heart to heart, soul to soul and spirit to spirit shared dance, sound and song experience.

Ananda Ubud History
In the 1960’s just as Bali was becoming known as a desirable destination for international travel, Wayan Pageh, decided to invest the money he earned being a driver, in buying one ‘are’ (an are is 10 square meter : 10 are comprise 1 hectare) of land in the area of Sangingan, just off Jalan Raya Ubud. One are became two, then four, and so on over the next 25 years. We now, almost 60 years later, have the pleasure of living amidst the rice fields, wrapped in nature’s embrace. We design our programs to include ample time in our assorted meditation practices…sitting, walking, dancing, drawing & painting, accompanied most often by the rhythm and music of the ricefields.
Wayan Pageh, along with his beloved wife, Suriyani, and their three children lived at Ananda, Immersed themselves in the daily rhythms of Balinese life; and, still today, these customs and traditions are kept alive. In November, 2024, Wayan Pageh, after a busy day in Ubud, went to bed and peacefully died. Of course, Suriyani, their children and grandchildren, miss his presence daily. And, now his spirit returns on each galungan day, to join them for 10 days, then with their blessings, returns to the spiritual world on Kuningan Day.
This Balinese family invites each of us who journey there to abide in the remarkable environment created for us by Pageh, as he manifested his vision. You’ll likely sense his presence as you walk through Ananda’s rice fields, play badminton, relax beside one of the three pools, visit the family temple, enjoy fellowship in the restaurant, or attend one of the classes offered to us by a Balinese staff member.
